Recognition Day - Ideas for Red Ribbon Week Activities

NIMCO, Inc. Encourages Red Ribbon Week Activities

Over the next few weeks leading up to Red Ribbon Week 2013, NIMCO will be sharing some activity ideas on our blog that teachers and community leaders can use to help students get excited about Red Ribbon Week. Many of these ideas can be incorporated in your school leading up to Red Ribbon Week.

Our 18th and entry is entitled: Recognition Day

• Create a Red Ribbon Hall of Fame, designate a special wall or create a scrapbook, plaque
or place to display pictures of individuals, groups, businesses, and agencies who have made significant contribution to prevention efforts.

• Do not forget your teachers and administrators, recognize the time and energy they spent
making red ribbon week a success, let the media know about your extra special staff.

• Moms, Dads, and Guardians need recognition too, take time to thank them for being drug-free.

• Write thank you letters to businesses in our community for celebrating Red Ribbon Week and for being strong role models for students in your town.

• Give special recognition awards to individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to tobacco, alcohol and other drug use prevention.

TODAY’S MESSAGE
“Thank people in your life today that give a good example of being drug-free.”

Alcohol seems so harmless and exciting to youth that they don’t realize just what one drink can do. Movies, TV shows, and commercials make alcohol seem fun or cool. This is a day you can educate students on the dangers of alcohol use and the effects of drinking underage.

• You can have realistic intoxication simulators setup so that students can get a realistic view of how alcohol effects the body. A great kit for schools to use is called “Fatal Vision® Goggles” that is specially designed to simulate visual impairment caused by alcohol and drugs.

• Pass out materials with facts about alcohol.

• Show students age appropriate programs about the negatives of alcohol.

Drug Free Community for Red Ribbon Week!
Red Ribbon Week is not just for schools. Encourage the youth by getting families and communities together to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. It is a great opportunity for us to remind adults that it is important to communicate with our youth and be involved in their lives. Adults are the most influential factor in a child’s life.

• Hold a meeting to discuss drugs and drug use. Develop an agreement about drug use within the family and community and have all members sign it.

• Offer red food & drinks: fruit (apples, strawberries, watermelon), tomato juice or soup, spaghetti, pizza, candy, red popsicles, red frosted cupcakes, fruit punch, and so on.

• Activities – fun run, bike-a-thon, volleyball, basketball, games, or contests.

One of the best ways to get students in the Red Ribbon Week spirit is to have a drug prevention rally.

• Contest between grades for the best anti-drug chant or slogan to cheer.

• Games and Group Activities - scavenger hunt, red balloon release, Walk-A-Thon, people chain, etc.

• Use your school mascot or special Red Ribbon Week campaign mascot to participate during the drug rally to spread the message.

• Have a moment of silence to remember students who have lost their lives to drugs or substance abuse.

• Wear clothing inside out to say “Don’t Let Drugs Turn You!”
