Drug and Alcohol Attention Grabbers™ - Do You See What I See?

Over the next few weeks, NIMCO will be sharing some "Attention Grabber™" ideas that you can use in class to help teach about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. The “Attention Grabbers” are designed to assist with teaching and speaking about the adverse effects alcohol and drugs cause to all who are exposed to these addictive drugs. We live in a visual society, making visual aids a needed resource to assist with speaking or teaching thus enabling you to reach your entire audience. The suggestions are designed to assist your alcohol and drug education programs. You may expound upon each scenario as your presentation or speaking time allows. Each “Attention Grabber™” is very cost effective to present with the suggested visual aids to reiterate the information given during your presentation. These "Attention Grabber™" ideas are also great for Red Ribbon Week!

Supplies:
• Blindfold
• Masking Tape (Blue found in most paint sections at stores)

Directions:
Put down two straight lines of tape about eight feet long. Allow about 2 feet between the lines. Tell the assembled group that you want to talk with them about the negative effects of drugs and alcohol on your body. Explain to the group that one person is killed every 22 minutes daily in the U.S. in a drunken driving accident. Drinking and driving is the number one killer of Americans between the ages of 17-24. We all think this could never happen to me but I am sure everyone in this room is aware of someone who has been injured or killed in an accident that involved alcohol.

When I heard these facts, not only was I amazed, but I started thinking; “how could this be”. I decided to do some research on my own and you will be amazed at what I discovered. I will need two volunteers to assist me with the demonstration. Have the volunteers join you in front of the group and proceed as follows.

Stand each volunteer at the beginning of one of the lines. Blind fold one volunteer and not the other one. Start talking and as you explain start slowing turning the blind folded individual around and around in place.
alcohol prevention | drug prevention | red ribbon week | red ribbon week 2014

Explain to the group that both of these young adults are at a party. Point to the volunteer that IS NOT blindfolded and explain that all night long he has resisted the offer of alcohol. Facts have proven that 1 out of every 3 Americans do not drink. Point to the volunteer that is not blind folded and tell him that he has just left the party and the only thing that he has drank is soft drinks. Ask him to walk the line from beginning to end. When he completes the task, ask him if it was difficult. The reply should be no. (This entire time continue slowly turning the blind folded volunteer) Ask the first volunteer to stand in the middle of their line. Now explain to the group that this individual has been drinking at the party and has had quite a bit to drink. Now take the blind fold off and ask the volunteer to walk the straight line. The individual will find it difficult and will probably bump into the first volunteer standing on their line. Have a chair available for the dizzy individual to sit in and do not make them finish walking the line if it is to difficult, be ready to assist the youth to avoid a fall.

This is an excellent example of how your judgment and motor skills are affected when you drink alcohol. Many illegal drugs have similar effects. Point out to the group that the drunk volunteer bumped into the volunteer that had not been drinking. Reiterate this is what happens many times to an innocent individual. They are injured or killed because of a drunk driver.

*For an added, bonus you may use “Fatal Vision Goggles” listed below for the entire group to visualize just how alcohol can affect their visual judgment.

Suggested supplemental materials may be purchased at www.nimcoinc.com

Back To Back - Ideas for Red Ribbon Week Activities

NIMCO, Inc. Encourages Red Ribbon Week Activities

Over the next few weeks leading up to Red Ribbon Week 2013, NIMCO will be sharing some activity ideas on our blog that teachers and community leaders can use to help students get excited about Red Ribbon Week. Many of these ideas can be incorporated in your school leading up to Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week, Drug Education, Advertising and Youth
Advertising plays a huge role in whether or not our youth will use drugs
Our fourth entry is entitled: Back To Back

Celebrate this day by letting students stand up together against drugs. Adults and students can learn from each other on what to do in difficult situations. Below are different types of activities that students can do together.

Set up role playing situations. Have students make a list of common situations among adolescents. Ask them to share ways that teens may deal with each of those stressors. Then group the stressors into helpful and hurtful coping strategies. Discuss how drug use can be a harmful coping strategy and how it can be a stressor itself.

Discuss anti drug advertising and the level of effectiveness on the behaviors of young people. Have students develop their own campaigns.

Discuss how various drugs are portrayed on television, movies, radio, magazines, music, newspapers, billboards or other visible advertising. Instruct students to watch television, mix up
the shows, and record the number of references to alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs and how
each reference was portrayed. Have each student share the type of television show he/she was
watching, the portrayal of substances and how he/she thinks this might impact youth.

TODAY’S MESSAGE

“With education and knowledge we can stand together against drugs.”

Planting flowers is a symbol of hope, and a great way to involve both children and adults in your Red Ribbon Week campaign. Most bulbs that are planted during October will bloom in April, during National Alcohol Awareness Month.

• Plant Flower Bulbs at school or in the community. Traditional flowers planted during this event are tulips and daffodils.
• Allow students to personalize garden markers so they can show off their drug-free commitment.
• Red Balloon Launch with drug-free message & school address on paper inside the balloons. Hopefully a school or individual will find the message and respond back.

Bullying - STAND UP -STAND STRONG - SPEAK OUT!

Bullying - STAND UP - STAND STRONG - SPEAK OUT!

Bullying is a major problem for children and teenagers. Acts of violence and persecution can happen at school, work, and even in your home. The more we ignore the signs and symptoms the worse it becomes for the youth of our generation.

According to the website www.stopbullying.gov bullying is defined as unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

We at NIMCO believe that the first step to changing unwanted aggressive behavior is to talk about the subject and make parents, teachers, administrators, and most important students aware of the problem. In 2013, our company developed a new slogan and product line called "Bullying - STAND UP! STAND STRONG! SPEAK OUT! Our goal was to give students and teachers material they could use and wear that proudly displayed the slogan.

Our hope is that these promotional items can help remind students to take a stand against bullying in a positive way. We also hope that the slogan will be a visual cue to those who think about bullying to change their ways before they hurt someone or worse...themselves.

To view the new bullying promotionals click here to view them on our website! NIMCO is also the sole distributor of the 2013 National Red Ribbon Week Theme "A Healthy Me Is Drug Free!" You can click here to view the Red Ribbon Week theme.

What is Red Ribbon Week?

Red Ribbon Week | Red Ribbon Week 2013 | Red Ribbon Week Theme | Educational Materials
Red Ribbon Week is October 23-31st

What is Red Ribbon Week?

Red Ribbon Week is the largest drug prevention campaign in the nation. Red Ribbon Week was instituted in 1988 with President and Mrs. Reagan serving as honorary chairpersons for Red Ribbon Week.   Red Ribbon Week is traditionally celebrated during the last two weeks of October with October 23rd-31st being the official Red Ribbon Week.

Why Celebrate Red Ribbon Week?
It is an ideal way for people & communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs.  Show your personal commitment to a drug free lifestyle by participating in a Red Ribbon Week Celebration in your community.

Brief History of Red Ribbon Week:
Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was kidnapped, brutally tortured and murdered by Mexican drug traffickers on February 7, 1985.  His tragic and untimely death opened the eyes of Americans to the dangers of drugs and the scope of international drug trade; thus Red Ribbon Week emerged as a reminder of the dangers involving drugs.  The first Red Ribbon Week was celebrated in LaMirada and Norwalk, California.   In 1988 the National Family Partnership (NFP) coordinated the first National Red Ribbon Week.  Since then Red Ribbon Week has been growing and gaining support world wide. Red Ribbon Week is a wonderful way to keep the memory alive of Kiki Camarena who truly was a hero in the war against drugs.  An estimated 80 million people participate in Red Ribbon Week each year.

Be a Part of Red Ribbon Week:
NIMCO, INC makes planning your Red Ribbon Week easy with products that will fit even the tightest budget.  Our marketing department will assist you each step of the way as you plan your Red Ribbon Week Campaign; we also have earth friendly campaigns to celebrate Red Ribbon Week.  We take great pride in introducing the national Red Ribbon Week theme each year at CADCA in Washington DC.  Our website www.nimcoinc.com is only a click away from assisting you with all your Red Ribbon Week needs for you to have an educational and fun filled Red Ribbon Week.
