Drug Free Community for Red Ribbon Week!
Red Ribbon Week is not just for schools. Encourage the youth by getting families and communities together to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. It is a great opportunity for us to remind adults that it is important to communicate with our youth and be involved in their lives. Adults are the most influential factor in a child’s life.

• Hold a meeting to discuss drugs and drug use. Develop an agreement about drug use within the family and community and have all members sign it.

• Offer red food & drinks: fruit (apples, strawberries, watermelon), tomato juice or soup, spaghetti, pizza, candy, red popsicles, red frosted cupcakes, fruit punch, and so on.

• Activities – fun run, bike-a-thon, volleyball, basketball, games, or contests.

Show your local heroes support by inviting them to come talk with students about the dangers of Underage Drinking and Drug Use.

• Invite guest speakers into the school to discuss the consequences of drug use. Speakers come from all parts of a community; Military, Law Enforcement, Fire Department, the parent of a child addicted to drugs, someone who has lost a family member to drug use, someone in the advertising business who can explain how messages are designed to convince people not to use drugs, and so on.

• Question Box to allow the students to get involved. Students can drop questions in box without names.

• Invite all students to sign their names on red ribbons and send them to Washington as a symbol of unity and concern for others.

Drug and Alcohol Attention Grabbers™ - Sweet Treats

Over the next few weeks, NIMCO will be sharing some "Attention Grabber™" ideas that you can use in class to help teach about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. The “Attention Grabbers” are designed to assist with teaching and speaking about the adverse effects alcohol and drugs cause to all who are exposed to these addictive drugs. We live in a visual society, making visual aids a needed resource to assist with speaking or teaching thus enabling you to reach your entire audience. The suggestions are designed to assist your alcohol and drug education programs. You may expound upon each scenario as your presentation or speaking time allows. Each “Attention Grabber™” is very cost effective to present with the suggested visual aids to reiterate the information given during your presentation.

Sweet Treats

Supplies:

Life is Sweeter When it's Drug Free-Jumbo Jelly Beans

276377-W

Directions:

This is a fun and exciting way to set the tone at the beginning of a speaking engagement or a student assembly. Rewarding those who interact with the speaker is a positive reinforcement for the audience.

Many times, this activity will open up the floor for discussion and interaction between the speaker and
audience. This “Attention Grabber” may be used as a supplement to another suggestion or as a stand-alone activity.

If you are planning Red Ribbon Week or an Alcohol Awareness Campaign, this “ice breaker” is an added bonus for adults as well as youth. Select candy or suckers that have a slogan that will tie into your campaign or lecture. We listed promotional Jelly Beans below as a recommended choice or you may wrap or staple your own slogan on your choice of candy or suckers.

Always be mindful of the type of group with which you are speaking. It is highly recommended that you have some type of sugar free candy for those who can not eat sugar. We discourage throwing any type candy or suckers because of possible injury.

Materials can be purchased at NIMCO, Inc. to help with this idea!

NIMCO, Inc. strives daily to produce and create educational products in the areas of prevention and education for youth and young adults. Each “Attention Grabber” is universal in presentation. The scenarios are designed to be effective for all ages.

NIMCO, Inc. wishes you the very best in your quest to educate youth and young adults on the adverse effects of alcohol and drugs.

Red Ribbon Week, Drug Education, Advertising and Youth
Advertising plays a huge role in whether or not our youth will use drugs
Our fourth entry is entitled: Back To Back

Celebrate this day by letting students stand up together against drugs. Adults and students can learn from each other on what to do in difficult situations. Below are different types of activities that students can do together.

Set up role playing situations. Have students make a list of common situations among adolescents. Ask them to share ways that teens may deal with each of those stressors. Then group the stressors into helpful and hurtful coping strategies. Discuss how drug use can be a harmful coping strategy and how it can be a stressor itself.

Discuss anti drug advertising and the level of effectiveness on the behaviors of young people. Have students develop their own campaigns.

Discuss how various drugs are portrayed on television, movies, radio, magazines, music, newspapers, billboards or other visible advertising. Instruct students to watch television, mix up
the shows, and record the number of references to alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs and how
each reference was portrayed. Have each student share the type of television show he/she was
watching, the portrayal of substances and how he/she thinks this might impact youth.
